Features the Micro Square PM driver “Planar” and the custom BA driver “Summba”

The Micro Square Planar Magnetic driver fundamentally employs planar dynamic technology. A planar coil is bonded to a highly rigid composite diaphragm—combining a lightweight metal alloy membrane shape with a super-engineered plastic—inside a highly precision-machined thin-plate metal enclosure. A powerful magnet drives this diaphragm. Directly driving the diaphragm with the coil delivers the powerful sound characteristic of dynamic drivers. Yet, the use of a high-rigidity composite diaphragm produces a unique sound signature with tight, clear audio. This time, three types of custom drivers were used: one for the low frequencies, one for the low-mid frequencies, and one for the high frequencies.

 

Furthermore, to fully realize the Micro PM driver's tonal character, we employed a second-order crossover network utilizing high-capacity AVX capacitors and a custom-designed balanced armature (BA) driver, the Summba. The combination of three types of Micro PM drivers provides multiple tonal layers in the mid-low range, while the custom BA driver allows for precise adjustment of the sound's balance between a moderate sense of warmth and clarity, enhancing the Micro PM's signature sound.

Housing Architecture “MIAA” and High-Precision Managed Schematic Design

To enhance reliability and deliver maximum performance, we developed our proprietary housing architecture, “MIAA: MADOO In-ear Acoustic Architecture.” All products are developed based on this architecture.

We named the component that houses the drivers the acoustic box. This acoustic box is manufactured using a 3D printing process and features a complex acoustic circuit known as schematic design. Many multi-driver earphones on the market employ sound tubes made of vinyl tubing. However, vinyl tubing presents several challenges: the material itself is soft, significant sound loss occurs due to crushing from bending, and even with optimal design, manufacturing instability leads to inconsistent characteristics. In other words, these earphones exhibit individual variations, leaving users at the mercy of chance, much like an instrument. To address these issues, we developed the housing architecture “MIAA” as a solution. Each driver is fixed in a robust and precise position, with sound guided through acoustically engineered sound tubes. The acoustically optimized sound tubes, designed schematically, feature precisely engineered hole diameters, lengths, filtering functions, and bore characteristics. This enables the delivery of exceptional sound quality. Furthermore, 3D-printed components are manufactured with dimensional control at the 0.01mm level, resulting in extremely precise parts. This ensures strict quality control, minimizes manufacturing variations, and allows users to enjoy the intended sound quality as designed.

Sapphire crystal combining beauty and functionality

MADOO's design concept draws inspiration from submarine and watch windows. This stems from our core concept of creating earphones built to last for years. In our search for a material worthy of such windows, we discovered sapphire crystal.

 

Sapphire crystal boasts a Mohs hardness of 9, making it extremely scratch-resistant, and it also offers high heat resistance. For the concept of headphones meant to be used for years, we considered it the optimal material, possessing heat resistance and corrosion resistance unattainable with glass or plastic materials. Functionally, its structure also harnesses the air gap to control the back pressure on the speaker units, thereby maximizing their performance. Compared to glass or plastic, sapphire crystal offers superior transparency and a beautiful appearance, making it a material used in high-end watches. This sapphire crystal is manufactured domestically in Japan by Adamant Namiki Precision Jewelry, a company specializing in components for luxury watches and high-end audio accessories.

High-Rigidity Housing

Housing rigidity is essential to maximize the potential of the driver unit. The housing was designed by engineers with deep expertise in metalworking, having handled cutting tools for Swiss and Japanese luxury watches and German automobiles. This housing is manufactured by machining SUS blocks with high-precision CNC processing.

 

At MADOO, we believe housing rigidity directly impacts sound quality. Therefore, we made no compromises in finish for sound quality: applying sandblasting to impart surface hardness and designing the shell thickness to be significantly greater than typical earphones.

Optimized shape derived from ear impressions of 300 people

While Western and European ear shapes are the standard in international specifications, they are significantly larger compared to Asian ears, often leading to fitting issues. Furthermore, the primary market for premium earphones is actually Asia, centered around Japan, Hong Kong, China, and South Korea. Focusing on this, we collected ear impressions from approximately 300 men in these regions over about three years. Based on this data, we derived the optimal shape. This enabled us to achieve a housing that combines a premium fit with design aesthetics.

Custom cable by Acoustune

The earphone cable employs a 4-core cable (2 cores × 2) made of silver-coated copper wire from our sister brand, Acoustune Custom. This cable, designed to minimize sound quality loss, allows the earphones to perform at their full potential. The connector section utilizes the new high-fidelity, high-reliability IEM connector “Pentaconn Ear,” designed and manufactured by Nippon Dicks Co., Ltd. Compared to conventional MMCX connectors, the plug and socket make tighter contact, resulting in superior conductivity. It also achieves both easy attachment/detachment and robustness. This product comes standard with two cables: the “MRC011” 3.5mm Unbalanced L-shaped gold-plated plug and the “MRC023” 4.4mm Balanced L-shaped gold-plated plug.
